Dakar Rally - the meaning of Endurance.....and Pain
This epic event is fairly unknown here in the USA. Unfortunately it's even more unknown now that Dish Network is not transmitting on the OLN Channel. OLN has a daily 30 minute update - so it's pretty frustrating if you're a fan as I am. However I just discovered that you can get really good updates, even high qulaity video at the Eurosport web site www.eurosport.com.
This is a popular European Sport channel that has a great reputation for supporting motorsports.
As for the event, originally starting in Paris, it now starts in Lisbon and travels through North Africa to Dakar on the West Coast.
Sadly a series of fatal accidents in the last years seems to be casting a very poor light on this ultimate test of man and machine (it's open to cars, trucks as as well).
Another fatality this year to a top Australian rider has saddened everyone involved and following it.
Fate is so cruel, for many years this event drew casualties, but rarely fatalities, relatively speaking. Now, with greater following and support, and higher quality riders - fatalities seem to be sharply up.
Figure that. It's a great shame, especially for the untold people who organise and participate in these events that make the world of motorsport, especially motorcycle sport so rich.
