Motorcycle Insurance and Floods!

The unfolding catastophe of Katrina makes me think about how motorcycycle insurance cover could be affected in this situation which has hit millions of people.

As a general rule if you have comprehensive insurance cover, then you should be covered (subject to deductible), as long as this was not specifically excluded.
Considering the scale of the event, its possible that some bikes parked on the street could have been washed away altogether - in which case you should notify your company or agent as soon as possible - who will advise the claims adjuster.

This photo is from an AP News posting regarding Katrina. Try and work out what bike it is....

If you had decided against Comp Cover, then its best to get the WD40 out quickly and minimise damage!

A homeowners policy usually does not cover flood risks, but if they did and you had an off-road bike or unlicensed project it may be covered under your homeowners contents coverage, but they usually want you to specify any contents worth more than say, $1000 when they erite the policy.

Opportunity!
In a few months there's going to be a lot of water damaged motorcycles around! There's an angle for someone to capitalize on this, as with care, most bikes will be probably quite recoverable - if not as good as they were before.
You should never attempt to start a bike that has been in a flood without removing the plugs and cranking over, as well as changing gas and oils etc.

In the meantime our thoughts are with all motorcyclists who have lost their pride and joy to the waters......
